Former Blue Orchid nightclub building to become gym

Part of the building which was last used to house the former Blue Orchid nightclub is set to reopen as a gym.

The building, in Park Lane, has been vacant ever since the club closed in 2004 – but is set to be given a new lease of life by fitness chain MYPT Studio.

It has been granted planning permission to turn part of the space into a workout studio and secured a five-year lease for the new gym.

The facility will stand where the downstairs dance floor used to be when the venue was a nightclub and will be kitted out with boxing equipment and weights.

Tom Riddick, managing director of the fitness chain, said he hopes to open the new facility by the start of March.

He said: “We are going to start work to convert the space on Monday (January 15) and we are hoping to open within four to six weeks.”

MYPT Studio already has a gym in St George’s Walk, so the extra space will act as an expansion rather than a new site, Mr Riddick explained.
