Government calls in Purley skyscraper plans

The government is set to review plans to build a 17-storey building on the site of Purley Baptist Church after opposition from thousands of residents.

Croydon Council approved the proposals for 114 flats last December, with a further 106 flats proposed for blocks between three and eight storeys tall on the other side of Banstead Road.

However Secretary of State Sajid Javid will now make the final decision, having called in the scheme for scrutiny following complaints from local MP Chris Philp.

A petition with 4,117 signatures opposing the scheme was handed to the council with residents claiming the skyscraper is out of keeping with the rest of Purley and fearing it would the parking provision was insufficient.
