More than 450 new flats are to spring up in Croydon town centre after a new cluster of skyscrapers were given the green light by the council.

Developer Fairfield has received consent for 305 flats over two towers on the site of Essex House at 101 George Street.

n

The scheme, designed by Rolfe Judd for the gateway site near East Croydon station, features two towers – one of 32 storeys and the other of 17.

n

Having taken up an option to buy the site from Urban & Civic in April this year, Fairfield’s plans include four commercial units, a gym, a new public piazza, landscaping, car parking, a cycle store and refuse storage.

n

Croydon College, in joint venture with Silver Star Properties, has won permission for more than 160 flats in nearby College Road.

n

A split-level building of 16 and 38 storeys will also include a 225-bedroom hotel and restaurant.

n

Meanwhile, a private client of Springer Nicholas is in talks with Croydon Council to redevelop the 15-storey Mondial House office block at 102 George Street, into a 42-storey, 250-flat tower.
