Fairfield Halls is the cultural jewel in Croydon’s crown, and sits at the heart of the Cultural Quarter transformation being delivered by Brick by Brick. This is a highly complex refurbishment and rebuild to a much-loved iconic building that will create a world-class performance venue. The project is employing some of the best and brightest talent in the industry to overcome the site’s unique challenges.
The £30million refurbishment of the Halls sits at the centre of the Fair Field masterplan to create a new cultural centre in the heart of the town centre, forming one of the most ambitious regeneration projects Croydon has ever seen. The wider scheme will also include a re-planned public square at College Green, a new independent underground gallery, a purpose-built facility for Croydon College and 2,000 new homes delivered over 15 years.
MICA Architects are leading the multi-disciplinary team to provide improved facilities and a reinvigorated cultural and commercial offer while respecting the significant heritage of the halls. The venue’s 1,800 seat Concert Hall will retain its acoustic integrity but will be fully refurbished to include new seating and modernised backstage and servicing areas. New interventions redress the balance of mass and transparency and improve accessibility in all senses, as well as enhance material function and life-cycle for the Fairfield Halls. This strategy has been developed through our unrivalled experience working with 20th Century Buildings.
Advising and working with Brick by Brick and MICA, Gleeds has been appointed to provide project and cost management and health and safety services.
Using complex modelling techniques, Gleeds has been working closely with the design and construction teams to ensure the building will operate with optimum efficiency upon completion, whilst also ensuring the greatest return on investment for the Council.
The Fair Field masterplan approach builds on strong existing relationships and expands appeal and access for new audiences, families, students, commerce and industry, which will fundamentally increase visitor interest countrywide and internationally. Restoration works on Fairfield Halls began on site in October 2016.
